“We are trying to create a great social reading experience and make sure publishers get paid for people reading their stuff. “ 我们试图创建一个社会化的阅读模式,出版商能通过读者的阅读行为获取收益。

News.Me, Social News Service, Debuts for iPad

By JENNA WORTHAM  April 20, 2011, 11:50 AM

News.me for the iPad is subscription-based, costing 99 cents per week or $34.99 for the year.

News.me, the long-awaited social news service developed in collaboration with Betaworks, a technology incubator, and The New York Times Company, is ready for its debut.

News.me is a newsfeed that uses artificial intelligence to monitor what people are reading and learn what they like to read; it then provides articles and links that will probably be of interest. The service will also display popular articles that are ricocheting around the Web through sites like Twitter and allow its users to save interesting articles to read later, using Instapaper, or share them through Facebook, Twitter and e-mail.

John Borthwick, chief executive officer at Betaworks, said on Wednesday that the application, which will be available first for the iPad, is scheduled to appear in the Apple iTunes store for download beginning Thursday. The iPad application is subscription-based, costing 99 cents a week or $34.99 for the year. Those without iPads can also sign up to receive free daily digests of article recommendations via e-mail.

News.me’s most interesting feature may be that it allows people to follow the articles being read and discussed on Twitter among friends, noted technologists and early-adopters from the Web.

“Instead of only seeing what you’re Tweeting, I get to see what you’re reading,” said Mr. Borthwick. “We’re taking the social stream and flipping it on its head.”

News.me also features another interesting twist: Its business model. Mr. Borthwich says the company will pay publishers according to how many times users read an individual article from their site from the weekly fees paid by those readers.

“On one level, its very simple. If people read your content, we send you a check at the end of the month,” he said.

But on a deeper level, he said, the service is trying to build a sustainable business model for an application built by pulling in content from dozens of other sources. He said the application doesn’t do away with any pay model put in place by a news organization.

“We are trying to create a great social reading experience and make sure publishers get paid for people reading their stuff,” he said.

The market to revamp how people read the news on the Web and mobile devices is beginning to heat up.Flipboard, the iPad app that transforms social feeds from Facebook and Twitter into a reading experience that mimics a glossy magazine, recently announced it had raised $50 million in venture financing to continue building out its product. Zite is another news reader for the iPad that uses machine-learning to curate which articles to show users. And early Wednesday morning, TechCrunch reported that Trove, a service developed by The Washington Post Company that analyzes likes and other personal information from Facebook to select articles for its readers, was finally available.

But News.me might have a slight advantage over its competitors. The service relies heavily on Bit.ly, the popular link-shortening service developed in-house by Betaworks that tracks which links are shared most widely around the Web. Bit.ly processes billions of links from thousands of content providers, giving the service access to knowing what articles, topics and links are surging in popularity around the Web.

“We’re trying to create a fresh new experience for reading on the iPad,” said Mr. Borthwick.

    是啊,其实概念倒是很简单的,这对中国的出版商和作者是一种启发。
